Saw this last night with Dustin and Dallas DuCasse. If CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER successfully reintroduced Marvels most patriotic comic character to modern audiences, THE WINTER SOLDIER revitalized him and fully brought him up-to-date—after all, he was frozen for so many decades before waking in the present day. In this sequel to the aforementioned 2011 film, Capt. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), alongside the Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff (Scarlet Johansson) and the Falcon (Anthony Mackie), discovers a secret conspiracy inside the law enforcement/espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D.—familiar to those of you whove watched the recent TV series on Marvels corporate sister ABC—and deals with a mysterious assassin known as the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) who mortally wounds S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson, who else?). The secret conspiracy involves taking over S.H.I.E.L.D.s system for monitoring and targeting terrorists, using it to control everyone on the planet. Rogers and friends are also branded as fugitives by S.H.I.E.L.D. when he refuses to tell them about the information on a flash drive that Fury gave him regarding the agencys internal compromise. Capt. Rogers stands steadfast in his patriotic integrity and moral values throughout, expressing concern about the anti-terrorist technology early on in the film. The movies overall message is clearly pro-freedom and anti-totalitarian—and with all the talk about privacy, freedom, and how much of both we actually have nowadays, its nice to see Rogers really develop from the last film into a fully-fleshed superhero. Rogers, along with the Black Widow and the Falcon, each have their own personal stakes in the fight, which adds to the story and the sacrifices they have to make to stop the forces of evil. Its certainly one of the best superhero movies Ive ever seen. Other notable appearances include Robert Redford as S.H.I.E.L.D. secretary Alexander Pierce (cast in part as a homage to his roles in 1970s thinners like THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR), and Gary Sinise (probably best known for his Oscar®-nominated performance as Lt. Dan Taylor in the 1994 Best Picture winner FORREST GUMP), who narrates a Smithsonian Institution exhibition of Captain America featured in the film. P.S. As is the case with Marvel Studios films, look for both mid- and post-credits scenes in this one in preparation for THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. P.P.S. Props to you if you spot the PULP FICTION reference in the film!
