Scariest personal earthquake moment: The Whittier Narrows Quake in 1987. We called it the Northridge Quake back then but then the 1994 quake got that name more permanently. It hit at 7:42am and I was in orchestral winds practice, zero period at Long Beach Polytechnic High. There were a series of cello cabinets behind us that could have fallen, nowhere to hide, and all these fluorescent lights overhead that were attached to ridiculously long wire poles and swinging around wildly. Somehow nobody was hurt and we spent the next few hours out on the old track field. I always remember looking up at those stupid fluorescent lights thinking they were going to fall on our heads, and then we had the quake and it actually didnt happen. Several of my FB friends were there and could share their own memories. This was also the quake that had the famous Kent Shocknek reaction on Channel 4. youtube/watch?v=ZWAlkZVyTOg
