Schools told to keep water tanks clean RIYADH: ARAB NEWS Published — Monday 17 March 2014 Last update 17 March 2014 2:27 am LATEST STORIES IN SAUDI ARABIA The Ministries of Education and Water and Electricity have detected failure on the part of schools in Riyadh province to control and maintain hygiene standards in school water tanks. This negligence has exposed the tanks to pollution leading to health problems for schoolchildren. According to an official source, the director general of the education directorate in Riyadh Province, Ibrahim Al-Misnid, has asked school principals to deal with the issue urgently. He called on them to abide by the scientific procedures described in detail in a letter to disinfect water tanks. There are several steps in the process. Personnel especially trained by a chemist from the branch of the Ministry of Water and Electricity will be deployed to collect samples from the schools’ water tanks. The trained personnel will only be replaced when an equally trained substitute has been found. Water tanks should be disinfected at the start of each school semester and two weeks before commencement of studies, the letter to the principals read. The letter stressed that all schools should follow the instructions and special mechanisms for taking samples and sending them to the lab in the governorate. Samples should be sent according to an approved mechanism with the relevant branch in the governorate after making sure all ground and elevated water tanks are clean and disinfected. The letter said that the schools in the Riyadh province should make sure that dietary sources are safe. This should be done in coordination with the specialist in the ministry, he governorate’s chemist. The number of schoolchildren in Riyadh exceeds 1.2 million, studying in 2,500 schools, with more than 90,000 teachers in all educational specialties at all educational stages...
