Science teachers on the NSTA members-only list server share teaching ideas, challenges, and solutions. A post regarding teaching loads caught our eye today and we invite our Facebook community to comment and provide helpful insight. Veteran HS teacher Arthur B. has been teaching 2 courses at a time but has recently accepting a rewarding position at a new school. Along with the reward comes the challenge—he will be teaching all 7th to 12th grade science classes at the new school, including life Earth science, biology, and chemistry, among others. He wondered how others deal with this. A response from fellow NSTA member Rachel A. sounds promising. She says, “The school Im at has me teaching 7 different classes and this is my second year teaching. The way I handled it last year was organizing my classes so that I had half my classes working on a project, in a group, etc and the other classes I was actively teaching. Then Id switch them. The key was to make sure the activity, lab, project, etc matched with what you are teaching. Sometimes these were a day or two, but it gives you a sort of break. When I attempted to actively teach all day , I was burned out by 7th period.” Tell us how you juggle classes like this if you have ideas to share!
