Scientists Propose Northeastern Japan Site for Particle Accelerator Tokyo, Aug. 23 (Jiji Press)--A team of Japanese physicists on Friday proposed the Kitakami mountain area in the Tohoku northeastern region of the country as a candidate site to host an envisaged particle accelerator in a major international project. The Kitakami area, straddling Iwate and Miyagi prefectures, is the most appropriate location in Japan for the project, the team said. The team also studied the Sefuri mountain area in Fukuoka and Saga prefectures in the Kyushu southwestern region. But the area was not chosen because there is a dam nearby. The accelerator, called the International Linear Collider, will be used for research into the fundamental building blocks of matter for clues to find an answer to the mystery of how the universe came to exist. Under the ILC project, a straight tunnel more than 30 kilometers long will be built about 100 meters under the ground.
