Scientists are moving closer to understanding the wasting disease affecting sea stars along the Pacific Northwest coastline. The virus, which is different from all other known viruses infecting marine organisms, is considered responsible for the largest marine disease outbreak ever recorded. Millions of sea stars from Alaska to Southern California have died after losing their arms and seemingly melting away.
