Scott Schaeffer : In 2013, the City of Memphis commissioned a study to improve the operating efficiency of its governmental operations. This effort resulted in the infamous report which informed the public of the nearly $700 million dollar short-fall in the pension/insurance fund. It also noted that the city needed to focus on more efficiently utilizing existing assets rather than spending money on new, wasteful projects. The study was released in April 2014. The Mid-South Coliseum was generating a profit when it was closed in 2006. I have a number of speculations on why it was shut-down, but again, they are just speculations. I firmly believe the City of Memphis owes it citizens a facility in which concerts and other entertainment events can be conducted just as city leaders feel that citizens need bike trails across the Mississippi. The proposed TDZ-baseball fields at the fairgrounds will eliminate most of the parking for the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium as well as stand in direct competition to GameDay Baseball in Cordova. The City of Memphis has no business going into conflict with a private entity in any shape, form or fashion. The restaurants and motels proposed in the Fairgrounds TDZ already exist in close proximity to GameDay Baseball. A city which is the cornerstone of the poorest major metropolitan area in the county can ill-afford to spend money on useless duplications.
