Screenwriter Reality - There are a lot of screenwriter wannabes - TopicsExpress

Screenwriter Reality - There are a lot of screenwriter wannabes cluttering up my other inbox lately. Screenwriter mating season seems to have taken over. Youre all on the prowl. After reading your numerous messages, some of them sent day after day pleading for my help, I have some words of advice: - Screenwriters do NOT get famous. Im sorry to burst your hopeful bubble but I cannot think of one screenwriter that is a household name, except maybe for Melissa Rosenberg. And in her case it is only because the Twi-moms went crazy when Robert Pattinson went shirtless in movie #2. Youre not Robert Pattinson. When the screenwriters name plays across the screen it is right at the beginning of the movie, when people are still going to the bathroom and buying popcorn and stuff. Its during that same moment when everyone wonders if another preview is coming on. They arent paying attention. No one is going to know who you are. If you want to get famous, be an actor, or better yet, a Kardashian. - I dont want to write your stuff. I cant write my own stuff if I am trying to write your stuff. - No screenwriter, sold or unsold, is going to write your script for free unless you are George Lucas. Youre not. And George Lucas wrote his own shit. See what Im getting at here? - Clarity is key. It takes too damn long to attempt to decipher the blathering storyline that youve sent to my inbox. Youve bored me. Blather = failure. Be precise. - Everyone has the next big idea. That information is not going to garner interest. Interesting stories garner interest. Be interesting. - You have this great idea but you just cannot seem to put it down on paper. Welcome to the club. Writers spend 90% of their writing time twiddling their thumbs, facebooking, swearing because they are not writing, and drinking wine. A writer cannot even manage to put their own ideas down on paper half the time. Why do you think they want to swear and get drunk over yours? - You dont know how to write a screenplay? Every screenwriter at one point in their life didnt know how to write a screenplay. They figured it out. So can you. Buy a screenwriting book. Take a class. Figure it out. - You cannot copyright an idea about a script. Sorry, it doesnt work that way. If you could copyright ideas every thought would be litigation worthy. - I was you five years ago, and I still have no idea what I am talking about. I give bad advice. Im nobody. Dont listen to me. Go bug someone who actually knows what they are doing and dont bother wasting your time with cluttering up my inbox.
