Seabird deaths likely due to starvation In recent days, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has received reports of large numbers of dead seabirds – primarily Cassin’s auklets – on the state’s coastal beaches. Last week, WDFW sent seven fresh carcasses to the National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) to be tested for cause of death. The only significant finding was that the birds were emaciated, likely due to recent ocean conditions that have resulted in a low availability of zooplankton. All of the birds sent to the NWHC tested negative for avian influenza. Similar observations of dead seabirds have been reported from southern California to British Columbia since October.
