Searching for Sugar Man is a brilliant documentary that tells an incredible tale of a truly earnest, self-deprecating, highly gifted, folk musician and songwriter from Detroit named Sixto Rodriguez who emerged in the 70s and was never heard again until 40 years later. He was born to working class immigrant parents and grew up selling his labour. Still lives in a tiny, run-down flat he has purchased in the 70s. The story was almost poetic. Soulful and wrenching. This documentary was produced by a talented Swedish documentary filmmaker, Malik Bendjelloul, who came upon a story about Rodriguez while traveling overseas that prompted him to begin his search and eventually spent 5 years making the film. (Unfortunately, Malik passed away earlier this year. Too young, too soon) I only found out tonight that Rodriguez is touring Australia (and needless to say I am kicking myself for missing his shows!). Tim Wong
