Secularism.. While west denounces any role of Religion in State, Indian State seeks a role in Religion but still refers itself as Secular(as enshrined even in preamble to our Constitution) .. Why ?? Western societys evolution path is completely separate from that of Indias. There never was a religious institution like Catholic Church, powerful enough to challenge state. In fact, apart from Episodic empires of Ashoka, Akbar, there never was an all-encompassing powerful state. The conflict and thus western definition is cant be applied in Indian context. India society, from time immemorial was a heterogeneous lot. Living with minimal interaction but splendid harmony and uniquely acquired autonomy. Colonial rule altered and disturbed these aspects. These communities were not just interacting, but also competing for stake in economy, politics and power. Ideologically powerful loyalties to ones region, caste, community evolved during this period. Plurality along with caste and religious loyalty matured and became part of Indian society. State could not afford to be oblivious to this fact and hope for self eradication of these traits. Indian context of Secularism was thus a natural adoption and perpetuation of Indian way of life. Also, Social and religious life in India were not discrete. Most social practices have religious sanction. So the pressing need of social reform could not be materialized by complete Isolation of religion from State. Indian State thus adopted an innovative definition of Secularism, that State would assume a position of neutrality and equally participate in all religions. Secularism in west implies a wall of separation between State and Religion. In Indian context the wall has a one way entry. So religion is not allowed to influence State in any manner, but State can intervene and abstain in Religion.
