Seduced and Abandoned. Let recommend this doc to graduating film students who are about to enter the industry, carrying with them the dreams of all the great films we have shown them in the darkened auditoriums of the lofty academy. Funny, pathetic, charming --and sometimes brutally honest. Heres our buddy Ryan with a funny rap that sits at the heart of the film, telling it like it is from a young auditioning actors p.o.v. What you dont see in this clip are the props he specifically gives to Derek for the way he directed him in Blue Valentine as an alternative to the deadly norm of set-ups type of filmmaking. Very cool and very much what he personally related to me at the premiere of Pines. Watching this film is like having that sit down with Scorsese and Coppola that youve always wanted to have them and finally getting to ask them, What...happened? It is stunning to hear them admit, on a certain level, defeat of their New American Cinema ideals. Both men have interesting answers of how theyve survived. Toback is something an annoying and persistent nebbish, Alec is something of a tempestuous teapot, but they are both quite smart and together they made a compelling reportage of what it takes these days to get something made and distributed in the industry.
