Self-replication in robotics has been an interesting area. A self replicating robot is one that can create a copy of itself given the raw materials. Any self-replicating mechanism which does not make a perfect copy will experience genetic variation and will create variants of itself. These variants will be subject to natural selection, since some will be better at surviving in their current environment than others, and will out-breed them. What is the potential, and what will be the status of these evolved robots when they become sufficiently distinct from their parents? ... ... (A Van Neumann (sp.) machine is a theoretical robot that can perfectly self-replicate using available matter. This has been advanced as the most plausible scenario for the destruction of the universe. An intelligent species that creates a single such machine could inadvertently cause a situation where all the matter in the universe is replaced with Van Neumann machines... What do your think?
