Selfishness (emotional fear acting out) and war (physical fear acting out) are symptoms of dis-ease within the juvenile human mind. The rational human mind has been ignorantly misusing the biological (limbic brain) tool of fear (our fight/flight/freeze instinct) by applying it to random thoughts ABOUT reality, rather than calling on it solely in situations where the body finds itself in immediate danger. Fear shuts off the rational mind by using our hormones to bypass our capacity to reason; it therefore drives us to behave in irrational ways. The mind can relinquish the biological tool of fear in relationship to its thoughts by discovering the myriad new tools it has at its disposal for managing its own thoughts in more useful and life-affirming ways. As we become more masterful at handling our new mental tools, we discover that their nuances and capacities far outweigh the three basic options (fight/flight/freeze) that fear provides. This does not mean that we reject or discard fear as no longer useful; it simply means we can choose to use that tool ONLY when its truly needed—when our bodies are in REAL and IMMINENT danger of peril. We can transcend the use of fear as our primary motivational tool by including it in a much larger toolbox, and by transcending its limitations as we develop greater competency wielding the more complex tools that come with the gift of reason.
