Senate Democrats wish Senator Dale Schultz a long and enjoyable retirement. While we disagreed on many issues, Senator Schultz addressed his work with an open mind instead of towing the Republican Party line. Despite immense pressure from Governor Walker and his party, Senator Schultz showed true strength in his willingness to stand firm against politically motivated union busting, against publicly funded vouchers for private education, and against a poorly written mining bill. His traditional Republican brand will be sorely missed in the Senate. It is truly unfortunate to see right-wing, Tea Party candidates like Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green) push moderation and unity out the door. The voters of the 17th Senate District know that Markleins ultraconservative agenda will not fly in southwest Wisconsin. Now that the 17th senate district is open, we are confident that Democrats will gain the senate seat that went 57% for President Obama in 2012. Democrats will regain the State Senate majority and restore balance to Wisconsin.
