Senate Republicans announced a Republican alternative to Obamacare - TopicsExpress

Senate Republicans announced a Republican alternative to Obamacare Monday. The Hill: The GOP proposal would “weaken one of ObamaCare’s most popular provisions, by giving insurers an opening to discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions.” “And while the Republican alternative offers a host of tax credits and subsidies, they are scaled back considerably from the financial aid available under the healthcare law.” “The CARE Act would reform, but not expand, Medicaid, forcing an untold number of people back into the private markets. The reforms would give states more flexibility on how to run the entitlement program, and would allow beneficiaries the option to use a tax credit to instead buy coverage in the private market.” Matt Yglesias sees this nibbling around the edges of Obamacare as a sign that “the Republican Party [is] stepping away from the idea that it’s going to repeal the Affordable Care Act.” “The key thing about this is that it doesn’t envision radically remaking the health care system along free market lines.” “Most of all, as a political document it reflects an appreciation of the overwhelming political power of the status quo.” thehill/blogs/healthwatch/health-reform-implementation/196504-gop-senators-push-obamacare-alternative slate/blogs/moneybox/2014/01/27/gop_health_replacement_plan_the_beginning_of_a_surrender.html
