Senator Tom Berryhill (R-Twain Harte) is urging the State Water - TopicsExpress

Senator Tom Berryhill (R-Twain Harte) is urging the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) to reject any proposals that would eliminate water allocations for agriculture. Berryhill and colleagues, from the Assembly and the Senate, sent the SWRCB a letter urging caution and considerable deliberation before making a decision on water allocations that could potentially devastate agriculture. Agriculture is the backbone of Californias economy. In many communities agriculture is the only industry. There are a heck of a lot of people that rely on it to put food on their tables and pay the rent. Decisions made by the SWRCB today to address a temporary drought could create a permanent problem, cautioned Berryhill. I understand that this is a very tough situation and that there are no simple solutions, but I think it makes sense to proceed cautiously and not take drastic action. The SWRCB is planning to meet Wednesday, March 12, to make a decision on the amount of water to hold back for emergency supplies as well as how much will be allowed for agriculture. In addition to urging caution, the letter asks the Water Board to wait until April 1, 2014 before making any final decisions on this matter To make a well informed decision, people and groups with something at stake should have the opportunity to weigh in, said Berryhill. No decision is going to be perfect, it is a delicate situation, but an informed and well thought-out decision is sure better than rushing and making a devastating mistake.
