Sent by an anonymous student from Hyderabad - We couldnt agree anymore, that we decided to post this here.... Has it ever happened that your college faculty told you that theres going to be a really good, really awesome & big seminar in your college or elsewhere?? Like its going to be like never before! Now-a-days, seminars and conferences have become less about learning and more about promoting colleges. Some colleges do that, just to show records during the time of college inspection and at the time of new admissions. SUCH CONFERENCES AND EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ARE ALSO CONDUCTED - whats even worse is that we all fell for it in our first year. And only after our 2nd year we realized that these seminars are actually lame. (I am not saying all, but a lot of colleges are doing this) Most of the times students are lured into paying the seminar fee (eg 7000 or 10,0000) by telling them xyz speaker is coming.. & many big people are coming as guest speakers.. were calling them from other states by flight blah blah & what not! 1) I want to suggest students not to fall for such bullshit. If your staff is saying that a big and famous guy is coming ask them WHO IS HE/SHE? 2) Dont pay the registration fee until your college issues a brochure regarding the whole schedule along with the name and details of each speaker (not just the chief guest & guest of honour). 3) And if you dont know those people then Google and find out who they are. Cause most of their research events, articles & works can be found on online... you can easily find who is who and whats their contribution to the field. At least youll come to know if your college people are just saying stuff to get you registered or if its the truth. Only when you are satisfied that it is going to be worth attending the seminar pay the registration fee. In-fact tell all your classmates and friends about it. And if your college is just making up stuff and giving you false hopes - Dont bother to participate until they actually try to raise the standards and meet your expectations.
