September 11, 1777 As we remember September 11, 2001, let us pause and remember another September 11. It was 236 years ago today, September 11, 1777. A day like very much like today – mid 90’s, high humidity, heavy fog hanging over the lowlands along the river. Along the banks of the Brandywine River at Chadds Ford were 30,000 British and American forces – the largest encampment of the American Revolution. The fog was so heavy the troops on the hill behind Mr. John Chadds’ house could not see the foot of the hill but heard the gunfire. The battle begins. It lasted all day into the evening. Troop movement covered 10 square miles and 17 townships. British casualties 500-600. American casualties 1000 to 1500. A mass grave is located at Birmingham Meeting House. The Americans lost the battle but through their perseverance and raw drive won the war for independence and our freedom. For more information see Friends of the Battlefield for a history of the battle. Let us pause and remember all those who fought for OUR freedom
