September 12, 2013 For Immediate Release Contact: Crystal Marez, crystal.marez@LCHEC, 512-556-8226 FALL ALLIED HEALTH PROGRAMS AT LCHEC Lampasas, TX – Lampasas, TX – The Lampasas County Higher Education Center (LCHEC) is registering now for fall workforce training programs in allied health. Payment plans are available for these programs. All programs include resume help, mock interview practice, and job leads. The Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) performs a variety of duties depending on the type of facility in which he or she works. They may greet patients, assemble and organize medical records, perform office accounting and bookkeeping, file documents, perform data entry, complete basic billing and coding tasks, complete insurance claims, manage inventory, and respond to telephone, electronic, and written communication. CMAAs may also schedule/coordinate appointments, outpatient procedures, hospital admissions, and physician consultations. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Certified Medical Administrative Assistants earn a median annual salary of $27,830 in Texas and $26,969 in Killeen. Course cost is $895 and covers tuition, textbook, and the national certification exam. Instructor: Misty Jordan, CMAA, CBCS. Class will meet Monday through Wednesday, 5:30 – 9 pm, September 23 through October 30. The Clinical Medical Assistant is a healthcare professional who, under supervision of a nurse or physician, is responsible for a variety of clinical and laboratory procedures and many administrative roles. Clinical medical assistants perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep physician, podiatry, chiropractic and other health practitioner offices running smoothly. Students study medical terminology, pharmacology, basic EKG, phlebotomy, and medical billing. Clinical Medical Assistants typically work in clinics, hospitals, and laboratories where both administrative and technician skills are required. Employment in this field is projected to grow 31.9% between 2010 and 2020. The program is comprised of 144 classroom hours and 160 clinical hours for a total of 304 hours. Course cost is $2,500 and covers tuition, textbook, supplies, and Clinical Medical Assistant certification exam. Instructors: Larisa Morgan, RN, M.S., CPC, CET; Shawn Jenney, CCMA, CNA; and Stacy Allen, CPCT, CPT, CET. Class will meet Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 3:30 pm, September 23 through October 31. Certified Nurse Aides work closely with patients and residents, assisting with bathing, grooming, and feeding. Working closely with patients, CNAs are responsible for basic care services such as checking patient vital signs, ambulation, and activities of daily living (ADLs). The Certified Nurse Aide position is one of the fastest growing jobs in Texas, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and jobs are plentiful throughout the Central Texas area. According to the Bureau, the median annual salary for a CNA in Texas is $22,510 and for a CNA in Killeen, the medial annual salary is $23,062. Jobs may be found in nursing homes, hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, doctors’ offices, home health agencies, and independent living facilities. Instructor: Malinda Galley, LVN will teach the class. Course cost is $700 and includes tuition, textbook, and workbook. Students must purchase their own scrubs and will need to pay for the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services certification exam (approximately $93). Class will meet Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 4 pm, October 7 through November 1. The Pharmacy Tech Exam Prep Seminar prepares students to understand the laws affecting pharmacies, recognize and process drug orders in both retail and hospital settings, learn special rules required for controlled medications, learn administrative duties of a pharmacy technician, and obtain a basic understanding of pharmacology and pharmacological classes for the ultimate purpose of taking and passing the PTCB national pharmacy technician exam. Course cost is $895 and covers tuition, textbook, and the certification exam. Instructor: Larisa Morgan, RN, Advanced Practice with Prescriptive Authority. This class will meet Mondays and Thursdays, from 5:30 – 8:30 pm, November 4 through December 17. The Certified Electrocardiogram (EKG) Technician is a member of the healthcare team whose primary duty is the performance of electrocardiograms on patients. An electrocardiogram of EKG measures the electrical activity of the heart and can be used to diagnose a range of heart diseases. Duties of the EKG Technician include setting up and administering EKGs and stress tests; preparing patients for Holter or ambulatory monitoring; editing and delivering final test results to physicians for analysis; scheduling appointments; and transcribing physicians’ interpretations. Course cost is $1,200 and covers tuition, textbook, the national certification exam, and classroom supplies. Instructor: Larisa Morgan, RN, CET.
