September 15, 2013 LIBERALS TO MAKE PATIENT-FIRST INVESTMENTS TO IMPROVE HEALTH CARE ACCESS (Halifax, NS) A new Liberal government will make important investments in health care professionals and operating rooms to help alleviate the current strains and stresses on a health care system that has created obstacles and barriers for patients. Nova Scotia Liberal leader Stephen McNeil today announced a series of measures to help reduce wait times for surgeries, open perpetually closed emergency rooms, and increase patient access to health care services and professionals. A new Liberal government will: - Develop a province-wide surgical plan to ensure health care assets are utilized efficiently - Meet the national standard of six months for hip and knee replacement surgeries - Establish a Chronic Disease Innovation Fund to improve patient outcomes - Ensure all Nova Scotians have access to a family doctor by investing annually in tuition relief for 25 new doctors who agree to practice in under-serviced regions - Appoint an expert Physician Recruitment and Retention Action Team so that Nova Scotia is able to competitively recruit new doctors and keep the ones we have “Our health care system in Nova Scotia has faced large challenges that have placed strains on health care professionals and reduced access for patients and families,” said McNeil. “For far too long the provincial government has neglected many of these challenges without an adequate plan to cure these paralyzing issues – that will end under a new Liberal government.” Together these measures will transition Nova Scotia away from being a sick care system, to become a properly funded and structured health care system. “I want to be clear; today’s announcement is about a re-investment in our healthcare system – an investment in our families, in our nurses, and our doctors,” added McNeil. “Making sure our health care professionals are well equipped and funded to provide care will be a top priority of our government.” “A new Liberal government will put the needs of health care professionals and patients first.”
