September 4, 2014 MEDICAL NEWS | PHYSICIANS FIRST WATCH 懷孕媽媽施打流感疫苗 對母子都會有保護作用 Influenza Vaccination During Pregnancy Can Safeguard Both Mothers and Infants By Anna Wald, MD, MPH HIV-negative pregnant women and their babies benefit from influenza vaccination, as do HIV-positive women (but not their babies), according to a New England Journal of Medicine study. Some 2300 women in South Africa between 20 and 36 weeks gestation were randomized to receive intramuscular inactivated trivalent influenza vaccine or placebo. By 24 weeks postpartum, HIV-negative women whod received the vaccine were less likely to develop influenza than those who received placebo (2% vs. 4%), as were their infants (2% vs. 4%). Vaccinated HIV-seropositive women also had lower influenza rates (7% vs. 17%); however, their infants didnt benefit. There were no adverse events or pregnancy complications associated with vaccination. This is the second large study to show benefit to pregnant women and their infants from influenza immunization during the second half of pregnancy. Although this strategy has been recommended in the U.S. for several years, only about half of pregnant women are vaccinated. Success depends on clinicians both endorsing the vaccines use and providing it as part of routine prenatal care. Dr. Wald is an associate editor with NEJM Journal Watch Womens Health, from which this summary was adapted.
