September is Food Safety Awareness Month, so let’s visit that. You’ve seen your dog (or someone else’s) eating another dog’s poop, and seem to suffer no ill effects. That must mean that dogs, and maybe cats, have cast iron stomachs and can eat just about anything they want, right? Nope. Dogs and cats are at risk of becoming ill from many of the same food-borne pathogens as humans. Humans can also become ill after handling contaminated pet food. Human and pet food can become contaminated in many places along the chain from farm to food bowl. As with human food, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversees production of pet food. That helps to ensure pet food is safe to eat, was produced under sanitary conditions and is properly labeled. This FDA video has some excellent tips about safe handling of pet food.
