Seriously, ppl shld read d whole story 1st b4 makin any snide commnts.Journalsts wil always b journalists. They hav 2 publish d most unphenomenal story wit d most catchy headline.Section 29 (4)(b) of d CFRN 1999 (as amended) has always been there. D senate only failed 2 delete it. No new law was passed, much less one which legalises child marriage in Nigeria. D presence of paragrah (b) of Sec. 29(4) of d CFRN,does not in anyway legalise child marriage. Under d Marriage Act,d marriage age 4 women is 18 yrs (any correction is welcom). under customary law, I’m fairly sure d acceptable age is 16 in some places and 18 in other places (pls correct me if I’m wrong). Moreover, Sec 21 of d Child’s Rights Act provides dat no person under 18 yrs can contract a Legal marriage whyl section 23 of d Act makes marriage to a child punishable by 5 yrs imprisonment or fine of 500,000 naira or both. Also note dat even if (emphasis on “even if”) such an enactment is made, it is still subject to interpretation by d court, and i do not believe d ministers at d temple of justice would let it slide. I respecfully submit
