Sermon for Sunday, October 13 Accidental Pharisees: "The Death of Mercy" Gospel: Mark 3:1-5 Pharisees love a litmus test. Always have. Always will. In the days of Jesus, their rigid rules and extra-biblical standards gave them a quick and easy way to distinguish between the godly and the ungodly, the committed and the uncommitted. It allowed them to know who was in and who was out. It allowed them to put limits on mercy. But God has no limits on mercy. Mercy is a kingdom principle. It is what God wants and has to be applied everywhere. Unfortunately many of us have fallen into the trap of worshipping rigid rules or harsh legalism. But Jesus continues to offer His extravagant mercy and another chance. Which one are you? The one who holds the rules over mercy or the one who offers mercy even when it is undeserved?
