Serpentine Sackler Gallery, Exhibitions, Bridge Commission, Saturday Talks, Fischli/Weiss Outdoor Commission Serpentine Sackler Gallery Serpentine Sackler Gallery, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, opened to the public on Saturday 28 September 2013. The Serpentine Sackler Gallery gives new life to The Magazine, a former 1805 gunpowder store, located seven minutes’ walk from the Serpentine Gallery on the north side of the Serpentine Bridge. With 900 square metres of new gallery, restaurant and social space, the Serpentine’s second space in Kensington Gardens is a new cultural destination in the heart of London. This autumn, Serpentine Galleries presents its unrivalled programme of exhibitions and events across both Galleries and into Kensington Gardens. Exhibitions Serpentine Gallery Wael Shawky: al-Qurban 29 November 2013 – 9 February 2014 The first major London exhibition of the Egyptian artist Wael Shawky, al-Qurban will feature the worldwide premiere of the artist’s latest film Al Araba Al Madfuna II (2013). Acclaimed as one of the most exciting artists to emerge from the Middle East in recent years, Wael Shawky was the recipient of the Ernst Schering Foundation Art Award in 2011 and the Abraaj Capital Art Prize in 2012. His films, installations and performances explore history, culture and the effect of globalisation on contemporary societies using multi-layered historical reconstructions to navigate the territory between truth and myth. Serpentine Sackler Gallery Jake and Dinos Chapman: Come and See 29 November 2013 – 9 February 2014 Jake and Dinos Chapman create iconoclastic sculptures, installations and two-dimensional works that address a wide range of themes including morality, religion, history of art and consumer culture. Their work is provocative and deliberately confrontational, approaching controversial subjects with irreverence and dark humour. Come and See will demonstrate the range of the Chapmans’s output - from painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture, to film, music and literature - providing a unique insight into the complexity of their practice and their prolific career. It will be the first exhibition in a London public gallery to encompass the breadth of their work since Chapmanworld at the ICA in 1996. Serpentine Sackler Gallery Adrián Villar Rojas: Today We Reboot the Planet 28 September – 10 November 2013 The inaugural exhibition at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery presents a site-specific installation by Adrián Villar Rojas, an artist from Argentina who has recently become well known internationally for his large-scale sculptural works, predominantly in clay. Through this medium, Villar Rojas creates an apparently fossilised world of ruins and ancient monuments, playing with our notions of time, history, modernity and the future. Serpentine Gallery Marisa Merz 28 September – 10 November 2013 The first solo exhibition in a UK public institution of the work of artist Marisa Merz (born 1926, Turin, Italy) includes a selection of sculptures, paintings and installations from across her remarkable fifty year career. This exhibition is the artist’s first since winning the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2013 Venice Biennale. Bridge Commission BRIDGE COMMISSION WALK 28 September 2013 – August 2014 Serpentine Galleries This annual commission marks the Serpentine’s expansion into Kensington Gardens and takes visitors over the Serpentine Bridge on a journey between the two galleries. The first in the series focuses on literature and takes the form of an audio walk. Twelve new original works written by established and emerging voices from around the world will be available one per month as downloadable files from 28 September. The first text is by Mexican author Valeria Luiselli. serpentinegalleries.org Free Saturday Talks On selected Saturdays the Serpentine Sackler Gallery hosts talks that address questions related to Serpentine Galleries’ programmes. This autumn, Saturday Talks will discuss the Adrián Villar Rojas exhibition in the context of the speakers’ own multi-disciplinary practices. Fischli/Weiss’s practice crosses a wide range of media, but underpinning all of their work is a spirit of discovery that encourages us to take a fresh look at our surroundings.
