Seven months ago, #DontreHamilton, an unarmed Black man who struggled with mental illness, was trying to get some rest in a public park when a police officer shot him 14 times, killing him. The officer, Christopher Manney, was fired, but has yet to be charged for killing Dontre. The Coalition for Justice and other community members have joined Dontre’s family to demand accountability and police reform in Milwaukee. Despite months of action, we are still waiting for answers. The police officers’ union is pressuring the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission to reinstate Officer Manney, in a too-familiar show that creates a cycle of police violence.
