Seven-year-old: We’re setting up an altar in our classroom for Day of the Dead. Tell me about Day of the Dead again. Me (Stephanie): It’s a holiday the day after Halloween where you celebrate your loved ones who have died. You set up an altar in your home to honor people you love who have died. You put pictures of them, flowers and you can put their favorite food or drink as well. Seven-year-old: So can we put a picture of Grandpa Warren? Me (Stephanie): Yes, exactly! Seven-year-old: Are we going to celebrate and make some food? Can we decorate sugar skulls again this year? Can we also make an altar in our house this year? And with all the questions I realized my kids have come to consider Day of the Dead, a holiday that wasn’t a holiday my husband or I ever celebrated growing up, one of their holidays. I love the beauty of watching their fall traditions evolve. Here’s a fun craft to celebrate Day of the Dead with your kids: incultureparent/2011/10/preparing-for-the-day-of-the-dead/ And here’s a book recommendation as well: incultureparent/2011/10/preparing-for-the-day-of-the-dead/
