Shankara was a rare soul to mankind. When the vogue was of Bhakti movement (esp. whence the alzhwars - Vishnu proponents had set their deep imprints of spiritual evolution through devotion in 6th Century AD) it was Sri Shankara who had the courage to go against the tide with his non-dualistic advaitic school of thought. Perhaps, the first of the revolutionary philosophies that projected the formless God as how it was originally described in our ancient nigama shasthras (Vedic scripts). It was Shankaras clarity, authority and conviction that made him one of the most singular titans of Hindu path. Its a pride to even think of him and his profound insights, as we commemorate his birthday today.
