Shared by Tarun Chettri ------------------------------ JUSTICE FOR SABINA CHETTRI Sabina Chettri was the daughter of Tara Kr Chettri and Shanti Chettri of Debrung, Namchi, S.Sikkim who was brutally burnt alive by her mother-in-law, Ganga Chettri (Thapa) & her brother-in-law Varun Chettri (Thapa) on the morning of 1st july 2013. Evidence suggests that even Sabina’s sister-in-law Bhavna Chettri (Thapa) who used to live in Dubai with her husband (Shakeel Handora) was the mastermind behind the cruel plan and even Sabina’s husband Bivek Chettri (Thapa),who also used to work in Dubai was also involved indirectly in the brutual murder of Sabina.Sabina had 98% burns in her body & on 3rd july 2013 ,she succumbed to her burns & took her last breath at North Bengal Medical Hospital,Siliguri. Sabina was a happy woman before marriage. Her life was perfect before she fell in love with a guy named Bivek Chettri(Thapa),originally hailing from Topkhana,Kalimpong who used to work in Dubai and stay with his sister Bhavna and her husband (Shakeel).Bivek’s mom Ganga Chettri and his only brother Varun used to stay in their ancestral home in Topkhana,kalimpong.Bivek was a kind of guy who could risk anything for his mother. He used to love & care her a lot.Nevertheless,his love for Sabina was also an ideal one,then.So,one fine day Bivek came to India from Dubai and they both met each other. Sabina fled away with Bivek to his ancestral home in kalimpong on 3rd feb 2011 & on 11th march 2011 Sabina’s relatives summoned them & offered blessings to the newly married couples. Their life was perfect & both were so much happy with each other. But who knows the future? From the starting itself Sabina’s mother-in-law,Ganga used to behave weird with Sabina & used to treat her as if she was a puppet. She used to make her do all the housework, gave no freedom or space & tortured her mentally as well as physically. During all these Bivek was helpless & confused as to whom to support because both meant life to him. Time went on passing by & one day Bhavna called up her brother Bivek & informed him about a well- paid job in Dubai. Sabina didn’t want Bivek to go away. Bivek himself had thought of settling in kalimpong itself. But Bivek’s mom forced him to go & so Bivek agreed to her & went away leaving his pregnant wife Sabina alone. Then came the worst days for Sabina. She was treated not better than a commodity by her mother-in- law,Ganga Chettri and bother-in-law, Varun Chettri. Her position had been reduced next to nothing to the extent that she couldn’t take a decision of her own. She used to complain Bivek about the ongoing tortures & violence perpetrated against her by Ganga and Varun but all in vain.Ganga was such a wicked woman that she used to blackmail Sabina that if she complained to Bivek about anything ill of her than she would force her son to divorce her and she would even say that Bivek would never deny her. Thinking of all these Sabina used to cry all throughout the day & night. She used to think of the perfect life she had dreamt with her love,Bivek.Still she tried her best to adjust with what fate had for her. She thought that one day she would change everyone even her mother-in- law, by shedding her love & care upon them. And on 25th march 2012 she gave a birth to a “girl” child. Bivek was still in Dubai. Even during that painful stage her mother-in-law didn’t cared & looked upon her. So Sabina’s mother (Shanti Chettri) took Sabina to Namchi. For four months she stayed happily with her mom & family. But thinking of the society and her Karma she thought that she must now leave Namchi & go back to Kalimpong though it was a hell for her. So she took her child and went away. Even then Sabina was persistently harassed by her mother- in-law & brother-in-law Varun causing her to suffer from mental as well as physical agony. With the time passing by Bivek also got absorbed in Dubai. His sister Bhavna and her husband Shakeel both were muslims.Bivek even used to talk to Sabina about his plan of converting himself and their child Aisha. Sabina was shocked and frustrated to see her husband, her life in that way. Sabina used to talk to her mom and some of her relatives and even her friends about her fate. Everyone used to console her, give her ideas to handle the situation,& some of them even tried to convince her mother-in-law to stay together happily. But it was possible only for few days and again everything was the same. So again on 18th march 2013 Sabina left kalimpong & came to her family at Namchi with her 1yr old daughter Aisha. Now Sabina had made a firm determination to never go back to that hell again. She was determined to live a happy life with her family itself in Namchi. But again one day Sabina’s sister-in- law Bhavna called her up & convinced her to go back to kalimpong. She told her to forgive everyone & told sorry from her mother Ganga’s side. But Sabina couldn’t figure it out that they were just “pretending”. So Sabina went back to Kalimpong on 6th June 2013. Then came the darkest days for Sabina.Sabina realized that it was just a trap for her to punish her for going to namchi and complaining every time of the tortures she had to tolerate. Sabina was helpless. Tortured continued on, be it the mental or physical. Her mother-in-law was really a cruel woman. Days passed by & on the morning of 1st july 2013 Sabina called up her mom Shanti Chettri sharp at 8:16 am.She was crying, her voice terribly shaking. She told her mom that now she couldn’t bear any more pain & that she would just leave everything back & return home forever. She also told that she was beaten up by her brother-in-law Varun & mother-in-law Ganga.She also informed her mom that now she would be packing up all her belongings and leave that hell forever. Sabina’s mom responded by telling her to leave instantly and come back. Then again after approx. half an hour came another call to Sabina’s mom from one neighbour of Sabina who also used to stay in topkhana.The caller informed her mom that Sabina had burnt up ‘herself’(??) & in the process of saving her even Varun got some burns.Sabina was admitted to kalimpong hospital with 98%burns. Her family from Namchi immediately rushed to kalimpong & referred her to Siliguri where she breathed last on 3rd july 2013.Even while she was serious with severe burns, she used to utter “Bivek”.One could imagine how dear he still meant for her.So sabina’s family called up BIvek so that she could have a glimpse of him.Bivek reached on 3rd july with Shakeel Handora(bhavna’s husband).As soon as he reached she tried to drink a spoon of water from his hand and left the world. FIR was registered by West Bengal Police against Ganga Chettri & Varun Chettri for the torture and violence against Sabina. Investigation was on. Police also arrested Bivek after some days because being a husband his role as a culprit also couldn’t be ruled out. Their house in Topkhana,Kalimpong was also sealed.But gradually police investigation started losing its pace & momentum. And on 5th july 2013 Ganga Chettri fled away with Shakeel Handora(bhavna’s husband).Police didn’t even bothered to search for her and she surrendered herself in Darjeeling P.S. after 3months.Sabina’s mother and her relatives used to go to Kalimpong police daily & ask for the justice to be done on Sabina. But police would just convince them by saying that “probe was going on”.Bivek was also released within 19days quoting lack of evidence to charge him with murder. Now the big question that arises here is “how could Sabina burn up herself when she had already made up her mind to go to Namchi and had even packed up her belongings? Sources say that she had even dressed up her 1yr old daughter Aisha. Did something else happened after she had talked with her mom at phone? Why couldn’t Ganga Chettri shout for help while she was burning? Sources also say that the door of the house had been locked up from all the sides during the time of incident. These are just some of the questions to which even police couldn’t answer. Police itself didn’t showed up the interest in probe.Why?Even now Sabina’s mother Shanti Chettri continuously beg kalimpong police for justice. But now they’ve started to shout at her telling her to let law do its work. Shanti Chettri gets frustrated over the reaction shown by police & she even doubts that the “high-profile” of the culprits must be the reason for that. Even today after 1yr,the culprits,Bivek,his mother,sister,her husband & brother Varun all are living an open life. Bivek has changed himself into Muslim, his Muslim name being Asif Ahmed Thapa.Sources say that Bivek is nowhere to be seen in kalimpong & is in relationship with another woman now & is about to marry her. And about Aisha, Sabina’s 2yr old daughter. She now stays with her grandparents at Namchi & cries most of the time. Her tears would melt even some of the strongest hearts. She now neither has mom nor dad. In today’s India where a single violence against woman is dealt in fastrack court, we could imagine how insensitive authorities have been towards Sabina’s case. Even if Sabina did sucide,then obviously Bivek,Ganga,Bhavna and Varun must have been treated as culprits.But why police is not showing a bit of ineterst in doing so.Why? Something fishy is smelling inside. So in the sense of humanity, friends lets all join our hands and fight for the justice to be provided to Sabina Chettri…..
