The author was held in solitary confinement in Iran for several months and was nearly broken. He returned to the United States only to discover that what happens in Iranian prisons pales compared to what happens right here in the United States. As you read this article, keep in mind that thousands of people are held in indefinite solitary confinement in the U.S., some of them have been locked in solitary for decades. More than 80,000 people were held in solitary confinement in 2005, the last time the federal government released such data. If this was done to you, no doubt you would call it torture. We must reckon with the reality that we, as a people, are capable of doing this to human beings. Yet we are also capable of doing it. Michelle Alexander
