Shark Skin Inspires Antimicrobial Material. The Washington Post - TopicsExpress

Shark Skin Inspires Antimicrobial Material. The Washington Post (9/17, Feltman) reports on Sharklet, a “shark-inspired material that prevents the spread of dangerous bacteria.” The material’s surface is comprised of several small ridges that prevent bacteria from attaching, according to a study in Antimicrobial Resistance & Infection Control. Sharklet prevented as much as 94% of bacteria from adhering to a test surface, compared to 80% of bacteria on a copper surface, which is the current hospital standard. Sharklet, however, does not kill the bacteria as copper does. TIME (9/18) adds that the pattern of small ridges “consistently demonstrated a reduction in microbial attachment, transference, and survival following simulated real-world inoculation methods.”
