Shelby C. Ritchie McLester, 80, of Locust, died peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, at the Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis after a battle with cancer Shelby was born Dec. 30, 1933, in Cabarrus County, to the late Jessie and Maggie Ritchie. She was also preceded in death by eight brothers; two sisters; and one great-grandson. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening (Wednesday, Oct. 1), at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. The funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 2, at 1 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Homes Lefler Memorial Chapel in Albemarle, officiated by the Rev. Gene Frady. Burial will follow at the St. Johns Lutheran Church Cemetery in Concord. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Herman Lee McLester; son, Jeffrey Lee McLester and wife, Kathy Bost McLester, of Concord; son, Steve D. McLester, of Locust; three grandchildren, Michael D. McLester and wife, Sue, Melissa M. Smith and husband, David L. Smith and Brent McLester and wife, Kristen; four great-grandchildren, Colton D. Smith, Darian Smith and Mason and Taya Sidzina; and two brothers, Ned Ritchie and wife, Elizabeth, of Kannapolis and Archie Ritchie, of Garner. Shelby loved her family, flowers, Bluegrass music, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and cooking out with homemade ice cream. She was one of 13 children and loved all her brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews. Shelby was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School and was a member of St. James Reformed in Mt. Pleasant. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Pallative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081. Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is serving the McLester family.
