Sherry Mottengad, others - on this whole book chain thingie - there are not a lot of books that has changed my life or influenced me deeply other than Bhagavad Gita - The Song of God. Even for an agnostic like me, its in-arguably one of the most profound human creations. I can of-course list 10s of my fav books but not sure if that is the point ?!. Anyways, few of the books that I have absolutely loved reading (and hope some of you could get your hands on if not already done) are 1- The tiger : a true story of vengeance and survival by John Vaillant..It is a true story of an Amur Tiger from the taigas of eastern russia. It is so thoroughly well researched that it is also a historical account of its people, natural history of the land and also hints for how man and animal could live together. 2- Memories of my melancholy whores - after a youth spent adoring Gabo for ..solitude and ..cholera, I think I got to love gabo truly through this book. There are still elements of the famed magical realism as from before but there is also a thread of reality - of ageing, of finding love and the finality of death 3- Yuganta by Iravati Karve - a rational view of the venerated characters of Indian epic Mahabharata. Cannot avoid mentioning MT Vasudevan Nairs randamoozham alongside which that also goes along the same thread as Iravati does. 4- Things fall apart - Chinua Achebe ; simply a milestone in literature coming out of my favorite continent. More than being what is, it also is a sad pointer to what could be. As we hear more of forest lands and tribals being destroyed from Borneo to Amazon to Congo, more of local people and cultures being swept away in development and cultural homogenisation, one can almost hear Chinua weep - Things are falling apart.
