Shopian shuts against ‘police excesses’ KHALID GUL Shopian, Aug 23: A day after business resumed in this south Kashmir town after five days of shutdown and violent clashes, complete shutdown was again observed here on Friday against “police excesses.” Reports said all shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed while traffic was off the roads. Police and paramilitary forces were deployed in strength to thwart any attempts of protests. However, pro-freedom demonstrations were held in the town after Friday prayers. “People in large numbers gathered outside the Jamia Masjid and held pro-freedom demonstrations,” reports said. Chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples League (JKPL) Mukhtar Ahmad Waza addressed the protesters. Condemning the excesses by police, Waza demanded immediate release of youth arrested from the town. “The State should bear in mind that they cannot muzzle the pro-freedom sentiment by resorting to repression,” Waza said. Business had resumed in this South Kashmir town Thursday after five days of complete shutdown against the ‘police excesses’ and detention of youth. SP Shopian Mumtaz Ahmad said it was a partial shutdown and only one part of the market remained closed. “Yesterday evening some miscreants, with their faces masked, appeared in the market place and threatened people not to open their shops,” he said. He said the issue has been ‘sorted out’ and business will be normal from Saturday. breath hacker
