Short spiel I wrote years ago on an educators list-serve. In the working class marketplace, TRUST, is a core shared value and basic needs are mutual. These are not shared by cynical capitalists and social elites, for whom, let the buyer beware, is the rule and perceived self-interests are radically different. At the extreme end of criminal capitalism this translates into: whatever we can get away with, perpetrated upon the working class and poor, is fair in business as in war. The Bush administration demonstrated the dark art of combining business and war, and in its eight years of shameless debauchery, accelerated the tendency for such practices and perceptions among the wealthy corporate-executive class as a whole. Thus, among an ever-growing number of the nations most privileged there is no shame nor remorse when, say, blocking passage of healthcare legislation that could strengthen and save millions of overwhelmingly middle, low income, and impoverished lives; derailing education reforms that would make our citizenry capable of informed, equitable, democratic self rule; warbucks foreign diplomacy that is a mere smokescreen for the Great Game of a military-industrial-congressional complex of geopolitical and corporate self interest, to the further impoverishment of the working class worldwide; of misinforming and propagandizing the US population to create insecure, shallow, venal, consumers of whatever goods and services and policies they wish to shove down our collective throats; of creating from whole cloth the servile, self-obsessed, self-debasing, confused popular culture by which we identify ourselves. They use cutting edge social psychology, advanced marketing strategies, and extralegal covert and immoral dirty tricks to divide us, to create heavy static in our communications so we cannot effectively organize for our mutual self interest, and to create advertising and political campaigns to sell us our food, like they sell us our cars, like they sell us our presidents. - Bill
