Shortly after the Philippine national men’s basketball team dispatched a selection of PBA stars in a tuneup match on Wednesday night, coach Chot Reyes voiced his displeasure over the play of point guards Jayson Castro and LA Tenorio. “Our point guards were terrible tonight,” said Reyes, who said that only Gilas Pilipinas team captain Jimmy Alapag played well among his point guard corps. Tenorio admitted that his play was lacking in the team’s first outing back on Philippine soil. “To be honest hindi talaga maganda laro namin, me and Jayson. We started flat talaga,” said Tenorio, who took full responsibility for his performance. “Hindi mo masasabi kung bakit ganito nilaro namin. Maraming factors. Pero kaming mga point guards talaga ang dapat accountable sa team. If ever nagkakagulo kami sa court kami talaga ang titirahin ni coach.” “Medyo disappointed ako sa game ko, pero hindi naman talaga disappointed. Hindi maganda kasi medyo nag-relax ako,” Castro, who disclosed that he suffered an injury in the game’s very first play. “Na-dislocate yung finger ko. Start of the ball game, unang pasa pa lang tinamaan na. No choice ako kung hindi maglaro kahit dislocated yung finger ko. That’s why nung second half di na ako ginamit. Sinabi ni Coach na mag-rest ka na. Kahit ako ayoko na ring pilitin sarili ko kasi baka lumala.” Castro added that the experience is a good chance for him to gear up for the FIBA Asia Championship. “Anyway, tune up game lang naman ito, at least sa FIBA Asia alam ko na gagawin ko. Sa FIBA Asia kailangan kong maging focused and aggressive,” said the Talk ‘N Text point guard, who knows that Kazakhstan boasts of a tough court general in naturalized player Jerry Johnson. “Siya yung sinasabi ni coach (Chot) na magaling na point guard,” said Castro. “Mas malaking challenge ito para sa amin. Pero maganda na rin itong mangyayari ito dahil wala pa akong nakakalaban na Asian country and baka kasi makalaban rin namin sila sa crossover quarterfinals.”
