Should MSD have relinquished the Captaincy midway through an overseas tour? As many of you have seen on TV, there is a group of people who say that he deserted the team. My take is as follows. I dont think MSD planned to retire at the end of the third Test. Something happened during this Test that convinced him to make this decision. This could have been mental fatigue reaching its limit or a gut instinct telling him to call it a day. I also do not believe in the dressing room conspiracy theories because we have not had any concrete evidence of any. When a player retires he walks away from all the fame and the glory and so it is absurd to label this a selfish decision. MSD could easily have continued to play in the Test team as a wicketkeeper batsman after relinquishing the captaincy as his place in the team was not under threat. Some may say he chose to quit the captaincy before he was sacked but he was under no pressure (unlike Sachin who was) to retire. Knowing that his heart was not in it anymore, continuing to play one more Test Match just because the BCCI asked him to may not necessarily have been in the best interest of Team India. Personally, I do not agree with his decision to retire. He is by far the best wicket keeper batsman India has at present in any form of the game including Test Cricket. He could easily carry on for a couple of years or even longer if he so wished. Also I dont believe that he wanted to quit before the judgement in the IPL case was delivered as Gulu Ezekiel suggested yesterday. If there was any evidence against MSD it is unthinkable that the Supreme Court would have continued to let him lead Team India even after the reading the Mudgal report in full months ago. It is my belief that an Inner voice told him that it was time to go. Let us respect his decision instead of casting aspersions on the man who brought so much glory to Indian Cricket and joy to millions of cricket fans around the world.
