Should psychotherapists treat their clients as patients or a people who share the same humanity? In the former case, all interactions are strictly within the counseling room and the clients are treated in in a strictly professional manner without any personal touch. In the later case, the therapist can also show kindness and compassion outside the counselling room as with any other human beings; even within the counselling room, the therapist does not hide himself behind the professional robe and is willing to be vulnerable if such authenticity serves as a model for being fully human and being fully present. Can you see the pros and cons for both approaches?
