Madison Community Cooperative, to which both International Coop and Syntropy belong, is currently in crisis - possibly the worst organizational crisis in its history. The crisis involves staff misconduct, and an attempted power grab by staff, contrary to the fundamental principle of democratic member control of cooperatives. Much of the crisis revolves around the actions of the current MCC Maintenance Coordinator, Michael Carlson. Im posting a link to a coop alumni petition that weve just begun circulating, that Susan Solterman and I put together. We’re hoping that all of you can sign it. Its a petition to dismiss MCC Maintenance Coordinator Michael Carlson, on SurveyMonkey. As Susan has noted, the Madison movement of cooperative living and all its innumerable assets are at stake. It is likely that the MCC Board will vote on staff contracts this coming Wednesday. If that vote happens, it should result in the dismissal of MCC Maintenance Coordinator Michael Carlson and Finance Coordinator Kathy Parker. Were setting up this alumni petition since its likely that, after any vote to dismiss Michael and Kathy, they may have their supporters petition for a member referendum to grant them contracts. A large number of alumni signatures (especially old alumni from a large number of houses) might help convince them to stop - especially since Michael is afraid that the exposure of his misdeeds caused by a referendum could damage his public reputation. And even if it doesnt cause them to stop, a large number of alumni signatures (from different houses) could help sway current members to vote against granting a contract. Weve deliberately set this up to be on password-protected links. That way, it should be much harder for Michael and his supporters to scream that were publicly trashing him on the internet.
