Silk Road Facts DAY 2: The main traders during Antiquity were the Indian and Bactrian traders, then from the 5th to the 8th century the Sogdian traders, then afterward the Arab and Persian traders. These traders and caravans may have started to make the journey in search of new markets despite the danger or the political situation of the time but the most significant commodity carried along this route was not silk, but religion. Buddhism came to China from India this way, along the northern branch of the route.
