Simple Savings Suggestions I carry around a small spending notebook with me everywhere that I go. In this notebook, I write down purchases made throughout the day/week/etc (not counting gas, grocery store, bill payments--this book is for misc. purchases). When I first started this, I actually got angry at just how MUCH I would spend on a daily basis. From vending machine trips to coffee shop stops! Once I started to read back through the notebook to see how much money was going out, I vowed to write in the book less. If Im writing less, Im spending less. Instead of making vending machine trips, I would find my favorite snacks at my local grocery store and bring those to work. I havent quite found a solution to the coffee shop stops (smile), but at a glance, thats pretty much the only thing that I am writing in the book. You have to start somewhere! Remember this, too: you are on the honesty system with your spending; write everything down. When you get mad enough from writing so much, you will figure out how to write less!
