Since I have been writing about ancient Indian wisdom & scriptures - TopicsExpress

Since I have been writing about ancient Indian wisdom & scriptures of late and have been relating them to science, many friends ask me if astrology is also scientific and if I believe in astrology. My straightforward answer for it is: I believe in astrology in its true sense (which uses science, mathematical models, astronomy & psychology) and not the astrology which says You will become President of India next year etc. Astrology does not predict future specifically. It is all about inclinations, probabilities and biases which are determined by the influential forces of celestial bodies at the time of our birth. Just like how a photo negative exposed to light for the first time gets imprints depending on the light rays falling on it (and influencing its photo material), similarly, when a child comes out of the womb, it is like a fresh photo negative exposed to forces/radiations from several celestial bodies. This will widely determine the kind of future & path this person is going to take in his/her life. Astrology makes such probabilistic model based on that (time & place of birth). It is not just a probabilistic model but a causal model at any given point of time based on the available information/inputs. i.e At any given point of time in a persons life, astrology uses his probabilistic model at birth and the causal model at present to again build the new probabilistic model. This new probabilistic model changes throughout the life (It is dynamic). Lets look at an example which illustrates the concept of this causal model & probabilistic model. When you join computer engineering, we say that your life is now on the path of an engineer. You will most probably join a software company. You will probably become a top programmer, you will probably be addicted to laptop and so on. i.e Based on the information that you joined computer engineering, we built a probabilistic model of what your future might be. Think about it. If you enroll yourself for computer science engineering at the age of 18, the probability of you joining a software company is much higher than you joining a marketing company. i.e The decision taken at the age of 18 almost decided your professional career by building a probabilistic model just based on the information that you joined computer engineering. Similarly, the factors that influence at the time of your birth will almost decide your life itself by building a probabilistic model based on the information of celestial pattern. (Ephemeris) But everything is actually in your hands. Despite joining engineering course, you might do post graduation in management . Despite learning programming, you might plan to become a teacher at a social NGO like Teach for India. Despite having the knowledge of working on laptop, you might not get addicted to laptop and instead you might get addicted to reading poetry. This is where the causal system kicks in. As and when you deviate from the earlier probabilistic model, a new probabilistic model is built based on the causal function (new decisions & available information) and the original (birth) probabilistic model. To put it in a nutshell: Astrology builds a probabilistic model of your life path based on the celestial pattern at the time of your birth and this probabilistic model is going to change depending on the decisions (causal function) you take in your life.
