Since independence, Kenya has been tossed around and played like a ping-pong game by various countries and imagined “supper powers” for the benefit of a few individuals and not to the benefit of her people. As I have always said, Kenya and indeed all African countries need great thinkers to lead her towards prosperity and not rely on foreigners to dictate our destiny as a people. A look at how things can turn around full circle in just 50 years from independence can illustrate my point here. Uhuru Kenyatta – the President of Kenya in 2013 is now facing the Eastern Bloc countries in search of survival after the Western Bloc countries relied upon by his father Jommo – “the Capitalist” in the 60s and 70s to frustrate Jaramogi – Raila’s father - “the Communist,” started dragging their feet towards Uhuru. Raila and Uhuru have also been put in two different sides of East and West respectively but both are total and completely capitalist. Indeed, from history, we learn that in the early 1960s through to the 80s, Kenyans were psyched and worked up to believe that Communists were evil spirits who would in fact rob you of your hard earned earthly possessions to give to your lazy neighbor. In Kenya, Whereas Jaramogi O Odinga was the first East African to come up with a Commercial Vehicle – The Luo Thrift (later to be copied by GEMA) to rally people towards Economic Independence did not help his image by leaning to the East for much needed help by the people. He was demonized and portrayed as a “dangerous” person by his opponents, particularly those who surrounded Jommo Kenyatta – the then Presedent of Kenya and latter by those around and President Moi himself. Immediately after independence, Jaramogi sent a number of Kenyans and East Africans (including his own sons – Raila and Oburu) to Eastern European countries and the former Soviet Union for further studies but when these people came back from studies, they were constantly followed by security personnel, arrested and jailed on tramped up charges or even forced into exile on advice by the West. Jaramogi himself together with Bildad Kagia was frustrated through advise from the West after forming the Kenya People’s Union (KPU) which was branded a Communist party. But today, Uhuru is facing East and Raila is facing West. What a scenario. God save Kenya from her leaders.
