Since violence erupted in Shuafat after the death of Mohammad Abu Khdeir Ive noticed something about the masked men throwing Molotov cocktails: theyre dressed just like a certain type of Israeli. I hadnt given much thought to the fact that their butts hang out while their jeans are pulled low before, wearing tank tops and t-shirts that say Castro. I was even more surprised to see images coming out of Gaza with young men their dressed in almost identical a fashion. Despite the fact that their is such hatred, it seems that Israeli culture (certainly that of a particular brand of Israeli) has so permeated Palestinian society - even Gazans society which smuggles in goods from Egypt. The images I see coming out of Syria, Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East depicts Arabs in quite different fashion: more conservative, fewer tank tops and certainly no on walking around with their butt hanging out on purpose. I dont have a particular conclusion to draw from this other than that our inextricable roles in each others lives perhaps means that we share more than one would assume. After all, for better or for worse, weve been stuck with each other for 47 years now.
