Sincerity is an important character trait for an advocate. I hear people say they cant imagine how anybody can eat animals even though they spent most of their life eating them. They make comments such as cheese is disgusting and milk is gross. I hope people understand that these comments may come across as disingenuous and off-putting if not framed as a realization rather than a lifelong conviction. When I was growing up, I ate the remains of chickens, cows, pigs, turkeys, and fish because I liked the taste. When I explain to people what I eat now, I tell them I understand how it feels to crave and enjoy those foods. I did too. I also explain I eat food that tastes very similar (often better and healthier and always more humane) and I crave and enjoy the food I eat now. The more people believe you understand them, the more likely they will be to listen, learn, and change. :-)
