Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) was a British politician, historian, journalist, and recipient of the 1953 Nobel Prize for Literature, whose leadership during World War II helped save the world from barbarism – at least for a time. Churchill was defeated in the elections of 1922, and, according to one historian, after being forced to resign, “to console himself, he devoted himself to painting before holding the palette of watercolors, then the oil colors.” As Churchill put the matter, “I am committed to this new activity with the usual enthusiasm and since then I have not abandoned the brushes, the main vent of all the crises that I had to deal with.” Churchill produced around 500 paintings during his lifetime.
