Sister Sam Update: Just a short time ago, at the advice of doctors and hospice workers, we were advised to prepare for sister Sam’s final days, though we were cautioned there was no way of knowing how many days. And so we prepared. We began to say goodbye. We even began anew to grieve our loss while feeling a complicated mixture of relief and, at least for me, a tinge of guilt at the anticipated relief/release for Sam, her children, mom and my other siblings who labor lovingly day after day to watch over her. I dont believe any of us imagined she would still be with us on Easter Sunday. That she is still with us and has very brief moments of awareness followed by deep sleep sometimes accompanied by a smile; we gratefully accept without fully understanding. We must also accept, without fully understanding, how, after so much time she is able to continue in a kind of suspended animation with little promise of changing for the better. These sixteen months have taught us much -- not the least of which is the importance of honoring and loving someone who cannot care for herself. Whatever is to come for sister Sam, it will come while those who bear witness to her life surround her. As always, our gratitude to all of you is profound.
