Six Month Update! Riley has hit the six month post transplant - TopicsExpress

Six Month Update! Riley has hit the six month post transplant mark and can return to almost all normal activities except attending school in person due to her needing to be revaccinated. Because her immunie system has recovered so well shell be able to receive the large panel of vaccines (she originally was fully vaccinated) normally given at the year mark, in early December so she can return to/start high school second semester. It is just way too risky to send her before thats done (insert pro-vaccine rant here - I cannot for the life of me understand parents not vaccinating their children, even for the flu, Ive watched my daughter suffer so much I cant imagine anyone volunteering to watch their child suffer something preventable!!) She does need to have a blood test each month to check her tumor marker levels to ensure the evil cancer doesnt return and to check on any indications of her developing a secondary cancer due to all of the chemotherapy shes had and a large battery of tests at the year mark to check on potential damage to her organs/systems. So after 8 surgeries, 15 rounds of chemotherapy, 2 stem cell transplants, 1 seizure, a hundred nights in the hospital(s), and untold moments of horrible suffering, here we are. Riley has had the most wonderful doctors, nurses, and support staff and I cant tell you how thankful I am to be living in this era of modern medicine and I hope everyone will give what they can to St. Judes and other childrens cancer research organizations as so much still needs to be done and scientists in this country dont have the support they historically have.
