Six opinions..Prof. Souto-Manning of Columbia hits the nail on the head: Recent educational reforms and policies have led to a teaching profession with limited opportunities for leadership and creativity, flawed evaluation systems, low pay and little chance for advancement...Standardized, scripted and narrow curricula mean that teachers are technicians, not professionals. Teachers are told what, when and how to teach, with little space left for innovation...After their work is devalued to a deadening uniformity, teachers are then evaluated based on students’ test scores. This punishes those who may want to teach in low-income neighborhoods because higher income students tend to do better on standardized tests...In the United States, teachers still struggle for respect. And it has gotten worse since all this reform, constantly referring to failing schools and bad teachers
